HOVE History

The Community Center

The Ocean View Community Association Inc (OVCA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation established in 1969 and is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers.  The OVCA is NOT a homeowners association, but rather a venue for the community to gather for various events, education  and comradery.  The OVCA strives to provide quality services and enhance the quality of life in rural Hawaii.  The non-profit corporation receives no capital or operational funding from the county or state of Hawaii.  Funding for the OVCA relies on Membership Dues (Individual $30/year; Family $50/year), Donations, Building Use Fees and Grants when available.  The OVCA provides Members a bi-monthly Newsletter, free computer lab use, discounted advertising and free DVD checkout.

HOVE was first developed by the Crawford Oil Company in the 1950s and has grown to be the largest center of population in the Ka’u District of the Big Island and is believed to be the largest subdivision in the United States.  It was first dubbed “A Township of the Future”  The town of Ocean View consists of six subdivisions comprising Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, Hawaiian Ocean View Ranchos, Kahuku Country Gardens, Kula Kai View Estates, Kona Gardens, and Kona View Estates.  Ocean View has a post office, hardware store, grocery stores, restaurants, tool rentals, hair salon, medical office, veterinaries, auto parts, business services, vacation rentals/B&Bs, and three gasoline stations. The town also has an available high speed internet service.  Local attractions include the Kula Kai Caverns, Kahuku Unit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and South Point (Ka Lae), the most southern part of the United States.
The Ocean View Community Center (OVCC) was built in 1979 by volunteers and mostly with donated materials.  It is located on three acres at 92-8924 Leilani Circle in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates (HOVE) and is staffed by volunteers Monday through Friday 8am-Noon.  The community center is the only building in the Ocean View area that can accommodate small and large events.  It has a stage, audio/visual equipment and a commercial type kitchen.  There is a lending library, computer lab with WIFI, DVD rentals (free to members) and the center is available for disaster relief.  Various activities are available at the center as under the "Activites and Service" tab, herein.
